Theatre of the People –Janakaraliya – ColomboDescription:
The ceremonious opening of Sri Lanka’s first ever mobile theatre festival was witnessed by a large crowd that gathered under a mobile theatre complex in Colombo when the Theatre of the People- Janakaraliya kicked off a two year mobile theatre project. A fusion of Tamil and Sinhala stage dramas enacted by a multi ethnic cast of young amateur performers hailing from several regions of the island was staged until 15th March 2005 under the mobile tent installed at the Nomads grounds. They will travel to 22 districts over the next two years with a two weeks’ stay in each location doing performances plus theatre educational workshops with local theatre groups, school children and other interested groups.
Designed and implemented by two veteran artistes- Parakrama Niriella and H.A. Perera, the multi ethnic Janakaraliya theatre group aims to create better understanding of conflicts within and between individuals through their theater programs. Over the coming months, the Janakaraliya also plans to introduce a forum theatre component in to their program with an aim to integrating audience participation in the live performances. This method will enable people to look at disputed issues from a non violent perspective that is based on dialogue and discussion. The group also works with tsunami affected people particularly with children living in camps. In the first week of April, the Janakaraliya will come to Anuradhapura to launch a two week long theatre festival before heading north to Jaffna.
The Janakaraliya is jointly supported by FLICT, HIVOS and USAID. Further information on how to take part in Janakaraliya theatre programs, contact them on 2762715 at the Center located at 238 A, Rajagiriya Road, Rajagiriya.
